“While a towel isn’t legally required at the gym, it’s essential for hygiene—it’s part of basic etiquette, just like clean shoes.”

Kai Bergmann, gym owner from Munich, Germany

In many gyms, bringing a towel is a must. But why exactly do gyms place so much importance on this? Is bringing a gym towel a real legal requirement or just a recommendation? In this article, you’ll learn why a towel is important not only for you but also for others, and what rules you should follow.

Towel requirement: Are there any legal regulations?

In Germany, there is generally no legal requirement to use a towel at the gym. However, many gyms establish their own hygiene and house rules in their Terms and Conditions (T&C). These may include a towel requirement to protect equipment from sweat and minimize the spread of bacteria.

If you want to know whether towels are required at your gym, you should check with the staff or review the gym rules.

Why a towel is important even without a commitment!

Even if it’s not an official requirement, a towel is an essential companion at the gym. It ensures that the equipment stays clean and dry, which does more than just improve hygiene.

A sports towel protects against bacteria and skin irritation. This prevents direct skin contact with dirty surfaces. Additionally, using a towel shows respect for other members and contributes to a pleasant atmosphere in the studio—an important part of fitness etiquette.

What is the right size for a sports towel?

The right towel size depends on which equipment and areas you use at the gym. Here’s an overview of three common sizes:

  • Small (approx. 80 x 40 cm): Handy for wiping away sweat, but too small to cover equipment.
  • Medium (approx. 120 x 40 cm): A popular size that covers most device screens well.
  • Large (approx. 130 x 50 cm or larger): Covers both the seat and back areas completely, making it the best choice for comprehensive protection and hygiene.

"Anyone who has ever worked out on a sweat-soaked piece of equipment knows: having your own towel is essential, especially out of consideration for other members."

What happens if I work out without a towel?

The exact consequences depend on your gym’s rules. In most cases, staff will first politely remind you to use a towel. However, repeated violations of the towel requirement can have more serious consequences, such as a warning or, in the worst case, a ban from the gym. It usually doesn’t come to that, though.

Tips for choosing the right towel:

Size: Choose a towel that is at least 120 x 40 cm to fully cover the seat and backrest areas at the gym.

Material: Microfiber dries quickly and is lightweight, while cotton feels comfortable against the skin.

Extras: Practical features such as anti-slip protection, a hanging loop, a magnet, or a zippered pocket for valuables can make your workout easier.

Care: Make sure the towel is washable at a minimum of 30–40°C and retains its shape and function even after frequent washing.

Summary:

Required or recommended?: In many gyms, a towel is required by the terms and conditions. Even if not required, it is strongly recommended to comply with hygiene and conduct standards.

Hygiene and Etiquette: A towel protects you and others from sweat, bacteria, and skin irritation—an essential part of studio etiquette.

Size and function: With the right size (130 x 50 cm is ideal) and practical extras like anti-slip protection, you’ll be perfectly prepared.

Care and Material Selection: Choose a quick-drying, low-maintenance towel that reliably meets your needs during workouts.
